The Bolivian Pampas are a vast savanna that extends east across northern Bolivia to Brazil. The pampas are criss-crossed by several lazy rivers, where rustic ecolodges dot the riverbanks. Our pampas tour departs from Rurrenabaque, Bolivia, on the banks of the Bení River.

Highlights

  • Marvel at the mass amount of wildlife within meters of your boat as you travel along the Yacuma River
  • Throw on some willies and go searching for the Anacondas in the wet lowlands
  • Hop in the river and spend the afternoon swimming with pink river dolphins

Itinerary

  • Day 1Grab a mug of api and papaya for breakfast and head out to meet up with your tour group at 9:00 am. We depart Rurrenabaque for a three-hour ride by 4x4 Landcruiser across the savannah outside Rurrenabaque. Transportation from Caracoles Lodge through the Reyes and Santa Rosa communities. In the afternoon, we arrive at the banks of the Yacuma River, where we stop for lunch. After lunch, we walk around the Yacuma River, which runs through the heart of the Bolivian pampas. In the open plains of the pampas, it is easy to spot wildlife, from monkeys and capybara to birds and anaconda and the ellusive pink dolphin. The boat ride is one of the best opportunity in the whole country for spotting wildlife. Have your camera ready and keep your eye out for everything from lazing caiman in the shallow water to large turtles resting on rocks surfacing in the middle of the river or hundreds of birds swooping overhead or jaguar stalking the riverbank. We'll stop for the night in one of the eco lodges along the river where you can fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle after dinner as the nocturnal animals come out for the night. Accommodations: Caracoles Ecolodge, lunch, dinner
  • Day 2After breakfast at 7:30, we walk through the savanna as we throw on some waders and slosh through the wetlands in search of anacondas and caiman. After a packed lunch, try your hand at piranha fishing or take a swim with the pink freshwater dolphins of the Yacuma River. Take a break in the afternoon and hang out in a hammock for a few hours listening to the howler monkeys and spotting different species of birds soaring through the trees above. We then head back to the Caracoles Lodge for dinner, and a short night walk. Accommodation: Caracoles Ecolodge, breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Day 3On the final day of your Pampas tour, breakfast is at 8:00, followed by a canoe tour on the Yacuma River to see the areas tropical flaura and fauna; catching glimpses of squirrel monkeys. After an adventure down river, a 4x4 will make the journey back to Rurrenabaque, arriving at 18:00. Accommodations: Breakfast
