Choro Trail 4 Days / 3 Nights

One of the most popular hikes in Bolivia, the Choro Trail is a breathtaking, hundreds of years old trek through a landscape of contrasts linking the lofty Andes Mountain Range with the subtropical Yungas region of Bolivia.

Along the trail visitors encounter everything from frosty mountain peaks that live high in the clouds to the rich vegetation that thickens into dense jungle valley along with the descent. Stretching over 47 kilometers, the pre-Incan route is an easy well-paved stone trail that even the most novice of hikers can accomplish and enjoy.

  • The Choro Trail is one of the best hikes in Bolivia and close to La Paz
  • Take in some of the most breathtaking views in all the Andes
  • Witness the vast biodiversity of the Yungas
  • Experience the traditional Bolivian way of life
The Choro Trail tour starts on Day 1 with a pick up from your hotel at 08:00. Heading towards the Choro Trail, your private transportation will take you on a drive through La Cumbre on the Royal Range of the Andes at 4650 meters above the sea level. Our tour on the pre-Incan trail towards Challapampa starts at 3200 meters where we will zigzag our way down the mountain past beautiful vistas for the remainder of the day. Once we reach Challapampa we will set up camp and spend our first night. Remember to bring warm clothes since due to the high altitude of the trail, the weather in La Cumbre tends to stay towards the cooler side most days and especially at night. (Lunch, Dinner)
Day 2 continues with a descent down the mountain towards the small village of Choro. As we continue downhill the weather becomes significantly warmer, almost semi-tropical, as it will remain for the rest of the trail. Along the way, your guide will pick a nice spot to stop where our expert chefs will prepare lunch. Following the trailside meal, we will continue to hike alongside impressive landscapes and the sweeping, cloud covered range of the Yungas towards the San Francisco Mine (Kusillunani). At night we will camp near San Francisco where you will be able to enjoy surreal areal views of the breathtaking Bolivian landscape. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
On Day 3, we will pass by ancient plantations where the local communities still preserve their original way of life. Along the way, your guide will find a comfortable place to stop where lunch will be prepared and served. Towards the end of the day we will arrive at "la casa del Japones", the peaceful home and garden where an elderly Japanese man, Tamjii Hanamura, spent 40 years of his life as a hermit (just recently passing away). We will spend the night here camping in the beautiful garden he once called home. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
After breakfast, we will start our hike towards El Chairo, a small traditional community located at the end of the pre-Incan Trail. We will arrive at the trailhead and town of El Chairo around noon where our tour will end. Here you may chose optional transportation to Coroico or La Paz at an extra charge. (Breakfast)
